California quail wall hanging

California quail wall hanging

Name: California quail wall hanging

By: Melanie from Victor, Montana, USA

Description from Melanie:

I made my own pattern for the quail by many times enlarging an illustration from a bird book, had to use feet from a different image, though. I used fusible interfacing to hold things together before I top stitched with a machine. This didn't work too well for the individual pieces of the flowers, however. Most of the quilt is machine quilted. I hand quilted around the bird, which was done after I took the closeup photo.

The Tabbycat says:
The above is a good lesson as to how to go about creating such an effective wall hanging. It is very interesting to compare how the bird comes to life when the echo quilting is added around its shape. See this on the main quilt photo against the detail of the quail in progress.
